Tier List "Woods"

Woods est le groupe le plus récent à avoir intégré mon panthéon personnel (fortement marqué 90s/00s) - Fait surprenant, si l'on considère que son artisan principal, Jeremy Earl, chante tout le temps en voix de tête.

Il réalise ses débuts à la batterie, en rejoignant la formation d'un certain Jarvis Taveniere rencontré au Purchase College de New York. Son nom, Meneguar, qui publiera trois albums d'indie-rock / post-punk énergique (me rappelant par moment Les Savy Fav). Et c'est en tant que "side-project" folk lofi du batteur de Meneguar que naît Woods en 2004.

Jarvis Taveniere finira par y adhérer en 2008, ils enregistreront dans son studio "Songs of Shame" (2009), particulièrement bien accueilli par l'influent webzine Pitchfork. Le groupe sera ensuite rejoint par Kevin Morby (jusqu'en 2013). Ils sont aujourd'hui 5, et poursuivent une discographie sans faille qui les aura vus passer d'un son noisy / diy vers une musique plus produite (dès 2016), ayant conservé ses racines folk, son goût pour le psychédélisme, intégrant à l'envie des expérimentations (ou de l'éthiojazz!), et toujours avec ce chant gracieux et des textures sonores éthérées.

Mais quel est donc cet "autre festival de rêve auquel je n'irai jamais" ?

Le festival organisé par mon groupe pref' des 10s, j'ai nommé le Woodsist Festival.

Il me semble que le line-up de cette année (comme des autres) parle de lui-même :

Belle cohérence au rendez-vous, dans la mesure où Woodsist est aussi une maison de disques de qualité.

Fondé en 2009 d'abord en Californie (cf. photo ci-dessus), le festival s'est depuis déporté sur la côte Est, dans l'état de New York. Il se tient aujourd'hui dans une ferme / brasserie, à "Accord" :

Visiblement, la jauge réduite et l'ambiance est bonne.

Tous les critères sont donc réunis pour faire de ce festival l'endroit rêvé... pour peu qu'on soit disponible courant septembre.

10 ans, 40 albums (Part.8)

Aujourd'hui s'achève l'énumération thématique de ma sélection de quarante albums des années 2010. Un volet de six albums, à rapprocher du quatrième. 

Woods y est à l'honneur, puisque représentés par deux albums. Sans doute le groupe que j'aurai suivi avec le plus de plaisir au cours de cette décennie. C'est d'ailleurs ce groupe que David Berman aura fini par retenir pour réaliser son ultime album de Silver Jews, sa "fucking suicide note" comme le dira Jeffrey Lewis. On termine avec du solide, Phil Elverum aka Mt Eerie dont je retiens Clear Moon plutôt que les tristes albums de fin de décennie, Scout Niblett et enfin PJ Harvey.

Strange to explain

A l'occasion de la parution ce jour du nouvel album de Woods, le New York Times revient sur la collaboration de ses membres avec le regretté David Berman au sein de Purple Mountains.

Jeremy Earl had been a father for two weeks when one of his favorite songwriters — David Berman, of the Silver Jews — emailed him with a plea: Help me make my first record in a decade.

[...] In early May 2018, when Berman wrote, Earl was taking a break to focus on his newborn daughter, Sierra, and the 11-acre spread he and his wife, Nicole, were turning into their home in New York’s leafy Hudson Valley. “I was in no rush to do anything,” Earl said in a phone interview from the barn that doubles as his home studio and Woodsist’s headquarters. “It was a welcome breather after years of putting the band above everything.” 

Still, Earl’s bandmate Jarvis Taveniere told him to write Berman back. Taveniere had been a Silver Jews zealot since he was 15, and he had pined for Berman to return from his self-imposed hiatus. Since meeting at Purchase College two decades earlier, Earl and Taveniere had been best friends and perennial bandmates. In Woods, Earl emerged as the songwriter with the bittersweet bleat, while Taveniere was the band’s intuitive instrumentalist and in-demand producer, even relocating to Los Angeles in 2018 to help others make records. That’s the tandem Berman wanted.

J'apprends de manière tout à fait fortuite qu'avant de faire appel à Jarvis Taveniere et Jeremy Earl de Woods, David Berman avait avancé respectivement avec Jeff Tweedy [Wilco], Dan Auerbach [Black Keys] et Dan Bejar [Destroyer]. Avec ce dernier, le processus d'enregistrement était même allé assez loin... feat. Stephen Malkmus en musicien !
