Some fuckin' derd niffer

Steve Albini est sans doute le premier producteur ingénieur du son dont j'ai entendu parler lorsque j'ai commencé à écouter du rock. Son nom m'aura accompagné jusqu'à aujourd'hui dans les notes et crédits de nombreux albums appréciés. Il est décédé Mercredi 8 mai à 61 ans d'une crise cardiaque survenue alors qu'il était dans son studio d'enregistrement Electrical Audio (Chicago, Illinois). J'ai eu la chance de le voir sur scène en 2016 avec son groupe Shellac.

Album covers of the week

J'avais un peu perdu de vu PJ Harvey, mais sa participation à la bande son de The Virtues, (le fait que nous ayons jouté entre amis pour déterminer sa meilleure chanson) et la récente ré-édition de ses premiers albums, l'a rappelée à mon bon souvenir. Intérêt de ces sorties ? Elle renferment les versions démos de tous les titres. Je les préfère éloignés en termes d'instrumentation que juste "similaires et moins bien" (travers bien connu des démos rendues publiques). Aussi je vous recommande particulièrement celles issues de "Dry", et dans une moindre mesure "Is this Desire?"

Quant à "Stories from the sea, stories from the city", il faudra attendre le 26 février.

Apprenant par hasard que l'excellent EP "More Revery" signé Bonny Billy (sic) existe désormais en version LP (avec en face B les versions live des morceaux de la face A), je ré-écoute avec plaisir cette reprise de PJ Harvey.

Ces mots sont ceux de Polly Jean Harvey, qui signe la bande originale de la série The Virtues (six morceaux originaux dont cinq instrumentaux + des morceaux d'Aphex Twin, Micah P. Hinson, Mono, Set Fire to flames...).

Si vous ne l'avez déjà pas fait, dépêchez vous d'aller visionner ce chef d'oeuvre de mini-série, disponible jusqu'au 30/12/20 sur arte.tv. Les acteurs sont merveilleux (Stephen Graham, Niamh Algar en tête), les vies cabossées des personnages filmés avec sensibilité, justesse (et brio) par le réalisateur Shane Meadows.

Aujourd'hui s'achève l'énumération thématique de ma sélection de quarante albums des années 2010. Un volet de six albums, à rapprocher du quatrième. 

Woods y est à l'honneur, puisque représentés par deux albums. Sans doute le groupe que j'aurai suivi avec le plus de plaisir au cours de cette décennie. C'est d'ailleurs ce groupe que David Berman aura fini par retenir pour réaliser son ultime album de Silver Jews, sa "fucking suicide note" comme le dira Jeffrey Lewis. On termine avec du solide, Phil Elverum aka Mt Eerie dont je retiens Clear Moon plutôt que les tristes albums de fin de décennie, Scout Niblett et enfin PJ Harvey.
